In 2016 we will again, for a fourth time, award a Scholarship worth up to $1,000 - 2,000 to a talented enthusiastic person to enjoy orienteering and coaching in Canberra Australia. Applications are now open. You can arrive and leave at any time. We have paid positions all year for teaching in schools.

As well as the scholarship you will receive opportunities to earn income to pay for your expenses. In addition our friendly club can help you with board and accommodation. Canberra’s orienteers (Orienteering ACT) (OACT) are providing a scholarship for an enthusiastic orienteer to volunteer as a Club Trainer for our southern hemisphere summer (or our winter if you like).
This is a great opportunity for you to holiday in Australia’s bush capital city. With some of the world’s best granite terrain at its doorstep and plenty of fast forested spur/gully maps within the city Canberra has been described as Australia's Orienteering Playground. You will meet friendly orienteering families, experience some upside down orienteering and gain experience teaching orienteering. In return we will provide rent, free entries to events and some spending money. If you have a working visa, you can obtain further paid work as a coach in schools, after- school care centres, and mapping local areas. You could also find work in non-orienteering jobs.

How does it work? Optional working visa If aged 18-30 and you live in most of Europe or many other countries this visa will allow you to work anywhere in Australia for a limited time. It costs about $367. It is not necessary for the core scholarship. Dates – Our scholarship programme has proved so successful we will consider applicants for any time of the year. You tell us the dates you would prefer. The minimum time is 6 months but longer is ideal. Our winter is the best time if you want some high quality events and the weather is mild here - a bit like a European autumn- but we have over 100 events each year just in Canberra . We encourage applicants at any time of the year. We are flexible and applications for any time would be favourably considered. We will pay for entry ( but not transport) costs to selected major events such as QB3 June Long weekend, July and August Canberra Events, September 7 day Australian Championships Carnival, Xmas 5 Days and easter Carnival. We will also pay your entries to major National Carnivals such as Christmas 5 Days, any National Orienteering League (NOL) events, World Cup Races and Easter 3 days During school holidays you will be free to travel and have a holiday ( although sometimes we have a training camp on for four days so we would love you to join us for that) Obligations to members (unpaid) - we ask you to: - Assist with organising 4 or more events
- Provide free training sessions twice a week for 3 hrs to club members
- Help our members become better orienteers
Further paid opportunities (with optional work visa): - Join in with our ‘Schools’ program and teach orienteering to school children
- There will be plenty of opportunity to earn money teaching orienteering in schools.
- Make some maps for us
- Non-orienteering work.
You will pay the following Airfare and other travel costs. Optional working visa fee Travel and health insurance A contribution towards food and electricity to your host family if they ask for it. Transport to and from events. OACT pays: A $1,000 - $1,500 scholarship (for 6 months, pro-rata if less) and up to $1,000 towards Free membership of OACT for 12 months – worth $100 All entry fees to all OACT events for 6 - 9 months All entry fees to major national events (e.g. Easter and Christmas Carnivals, National Orienteering League competitions, World Cup events). You will need to pay for transport costs
You will need A police check (we will assist with this). This is called WWVP purple card (working with vulnerable people) and takes 6 weeks to process To attend a couple of one day workshops here (and perhaps give a lesson) To have good English, communicate well and be a good orienteer No formal qualifications in coaching are required but some previous experience is essential. You need to complete an Australian Government on line coaching course (This takes 3-4 hours) You will need a driving licence and ideally to purchase a car as public transport is limited ( and you will need one to visit the local beaches ! ) . We can help you find one.
Accommodation You will be billeted with various club families if you wish. You may be asked to pay the family a negotiable weekly amount for food and electricity

What will I need to provide? A reminder you will need WWVPL (police working with vulnerable people ) check / A work visa if you want to work in a bar or restaurant / Medial insurance – medical costs in Australia can be very high. Can Australians and New Zealanders apply? Yes What will I need to do? - Calendar of volunteer opportunities for ACT Coach-in-Residence Scholarship We are very flexible with the programme but here is our suggestion. Here is what we would like you to do over a 6 month period - listed in our priority of importance 1 .. Assistance at 4 events helping with organising 2 .. Club Training Navigational Workshops 12 Wednesday evenings 4.30 pm – 7pm We envisage you producing training maps (eg contour only , memory , window maps ) that are available for members to use instead of their usual course . There may be 20 or so people attending each of your training sessions so you may only be able to give fairly brief instruction and answer individual’s questions briefly. Unpaid 12 Saturday mornings 9am -11am Moderate and Beginner workshops for 2-3 hrs 4 Whole Sundays – Advanced workshops lasting all day on a bush map out of town 3 .. Mapping Workshops – these could be evening or mid – week – unpaid Iodeally you would be able to teach some of our volunteers how to use OCAD. 4 .. In School Training Body and Brian Workshops (see link Sporting Schools on our Juniors Page) – some money available (usually $25 per hour inlucuding preparation time) Dates vary and are by negotiation and depend on your enthusiasm We are likely to have plenty of opportunities for you to earn money in this area due to new Government Grants. 5 .. After School Care Programme –optional – some money available. $50 per one hour session (preparation time is unpaid) This may be available This requires WWVPL (police) check , a one day training workshop and other requirements 6 .. Mapping activities – some money available There are several areas that need mapping or remapping When do these activities take place? Most of our activities occur during our school term. In school holidays you are free to travel. To check school term dates please google " ACT School Term Dates" When do I have to arrive? You can arrive anytime. We would prefer you to arrive at least a week before the Term starts. this allows time to prepare you for the activities in that term.. We are flexible. We prefer you stay for at least 6 months. The Big Australian Carnivals are in June , September, December, and Easter. Our Winter is the best time for major local events. When do I have to leave? You can leave anytime but we prefer that you stay for at least six months. Where will I live and what will that cost? You will be billeted with various host families in the beautiful peaceful city of Canberra. Some families might ask you for a contribution towards food and electricity. This is negotiable with the individual family. Do I need a car? a computer? a phone? It is difficult to travel on public transport to many events. A driver’s licence is essential. A car is essential. Previous scholars have purchased a car for their stay and sold it again before they leave. We could help you with this sale. You will need your own laptop and your own mobile phone. Internet fees in Australia are higher than in Europe. How much can I earn? Apart from the scholarship of $1,000 cash and the $1,000 worth of entries/ memberships etc you can also earn money (if you have a work- visa) on orienteering work (in schools or at after school centres). Depending on your enthusiasm this could be substantial with rates of $20 - $25 per hour. We frequently receive requests from schools that want instruction but we are too busy to do it for them. In addition you can do non-orienteering for example at a bar or shop. This usually pays about $17 per hour for an unskilled person. Is the police check essential? Yes under our law you will need to apply for this free check to make sure you are safe to work with children. It is easy and we can help you apply for this . You should apply at least 6 weeks before you arrive. Details can be found by typing "WWVPL ACT" into a search engine. (Working With Vulnerable People Legislation ACT ) Do I need qualifications or to be a good orienteer? You do not need to be at elite level but obviously you have to know how to orienteer well. No formal qualifications are required. We expect that you have had some coaching experience. Mapping experience is useful but not essential. OCAD experience is useful but not essential. Please tell us what your major interests are and we will fit the duties to meet your interests. This is not a job! We want you to have fun! We are sure you will learn heaps whilst you are here. How do I apply? There is no “application form”. Include your name and the word "scholarship" in the title of the email. When should I apply? Please apply now ! Applications are open all year round. The sooner you apply the better your chances. Simply state what dates (minimum 6 months ) you can come. The more flexible you are the better your chances. We usually have more applicants than we can place in our Summer. Your chances are better if you apply for a position in our winter.
