Red Roos Enjoy 2010 AGM at Weston Park

Monday, 6 December 2010

Around 30 Red Roos enjoyed their 2010 Annual Gathering of Members at Weston Park in bright sunshine on the evening of Sunday 5 December.  Like all previous AGMs, the food and wine came first and after about 90 minutes of enjoying a mixture barbequed steaks and sausages, and tasty vegetarian meals, washed down a quenching ale and a good red (what else would Red Roos drink) the group settled down to appoint its office holders for 2011.  And then began the entertainment in the form of annual awards.

Anne Sawkins $50 Note Award. Proceedings started with Rob Walter recounting his mishap while cycling home from work that resulted in a nasty fall and a $700 dentist bill to fix two damaged teeth. The award celebrates an old $50 note found by Anne Sawkins during an orienteering event in Victoria. Because of the time it spent in the forest it is too badly damaged to be accepted as legal tender, so the award is given to the person who tells the most self-abasing story about a mishap during the year. Slow and Steady Award. Instituted in 1986 the Slow and Steady Award was introduced to provide an award that could be given to those who might never win another award, with two conditions: it could only be won once, and the recipient chose the next recipient. However, over the years while the once only winner rule has been respected, the winners have not always been slow or steady, but have won the award for an outstanding example of being slow, or for being steady, but not necessarily slow. On that basis, Chris Mill handed the trophy over to Michael Burt. Red Roos Improover Award. Instituted in 1979 the Red Roos Improover Award is presented to the person who is seen to have made the most improvement since the previous year and should only be awarded once. This year’s Red Roos Improover was Anita Scherrer.
