Ciaran Lane and Oliver Mill Appointed as Development Officers

Tuesday, 22 November 2016

Photos (L to R) Ciaran Lane, Oliver Mill, Stephen Goggs

OACT is pleased to announce that the recently advertised part-time position of Development Officer will be filled by experienced, young local orienteers Ciaran Lane (Parawanga) and Oliver Mill (Bushflyers) who will take on the position jointly, effective immediately. We look forward to Ciaran and Oliver building on the impressive groundwork that has been laid across the schools and wider community by Toni Brown over the past two years.

We live in exciting times, with Toni and the team of volunteer community coaches having delivered face-to-face sessions to almost 22,000 participations in many schools, which is estimated to be equivalent to around 7-8,000 unique individuals . This recently culminated in the highly successful running of the four-week SC-ORE schools orienteering competition – run entirely by volunteers.

In the short term the Board has also asked Stephen Goggs (Red Roos) to act as a mentor to the new development officers as they take over the reins. Ciaran and Oliver will be well-known to many orienteers already, but all members are encouraged to make themselves known to them, especially if you have an active interest in opportunities for development of our sport into the future.

The Big SC-ORE Final

Thursday, 10 November 2016

While heavy clouds to the west unsettled the organisers, nothing was going to stop the ultimate Spring '16 SC-ORE School Orienteering Challenge!  Parents and children were all out in force as the heavy clouds gave way to a beautiful Spring morning. Today was at Curtin Primary School. Top placings were fiercely competitive.

The courses remained as challenging as former weeks, with several changes of direction required around and behind buildings with all runners keeping  their wits about them as they darted here and there, eager for "full speed, no mistakes".

96 children gave it their all over the 4 weeks of the SC-ORE interschool Challenge, with the thrill of the chase continuing to dominate right through to the end! Presentations were made by Ewan Barnett and Patrick Miller, Charlotte Watson and Katie Reynolds. Patrick, Charlotte, Katie and Swedish scholar Jacob were our terrific course setters for this four week series. The Results and Leg Splits for SCO-RE # 4 have now been posted. Confirmed team ranking over the series is here .

More photos are at OACT Facebook. If you loved SC-ORE don't forget we have 100 orienteering events per year here in Canberra, including

Radford College - Sprint format fun

Monday, 7 November 2016

Twilight #5 brings us back to Belco - this time on a sprint format map, the most intriguing Radford College and Gossan Hill grounds. Setters Pia Cunningham and Ella Cuthbert have teamed up to course set, under the watchful eye of the very experienced Carol Harding.

Rounding off the all girl event team is Jo Hobson, and daughter Justine as organisers.

This brings the average age of course setters for Bushflyer Twilight 2016 events to 14 years. Orange 1 and Orange 2 level course will be offered as a blind start this week. There will be no T-training maps. Competitors need to be conscious of the rules relating to out-of-bounds and uncrossable features.  Please ensure you do not cross any areas identified as out-of-bounds or uncrossable.

OACT Controllers Course, Sat 12 Nov

Friday, 4 November 2016

o    Do you enjoy orienteering?
o    Do you enjoy courses that are challenging, yet fun and fair?
o    Do you think some orienteering events could have had more interesting courses?
o    Do you get frustrated with controls not being in the correct location?

If you answer yes to any of the above questions, then we need you.
Orienteering relies on controllers to ensure orienteering is fun, fair and safe. They check the design of courses, control location, mapping. And they are responsible for overseeing the organisation of events, in particular OACT’s safety requirements.

To make it happen, become a controller. OACT is holding a controller’s workshop on
Saturday 12 November 2016 at Maitland House, Hackett. OACT will cover the costs of the workshop and free lunch will be provided.
How to register
Send an email to Anita.Scherrer5@bigpond.com. Please advise of special dietary requirements.

ACT MTBO Weekend Postponed

Tuesday, 25 October 2016

It is with regret that we postpone the ACT MTBO weekend. Five consecutive months of above average rainfall has taken its toll on the event areas. It is unlikely they will recover in time to enable safe and enjoyable orienteering on 22/23 Oct. We will let you when we have a new weekend for the events.

Another Two-Bob Show at Farrer Ridge

Tuesday, 25 October 2016

Photo: A view from the summit you will only see if you take a poor route choice

Bob Allison and Bob Mouatt will stage another Two-Bob (now 20 cents) event the Runners Shop Twilight Series # 3 at Farrer Ridge.  They have been collaborating on orienteering matters for over 35 years and working as a team to stage events for at least 20 years.  Those events were normally at State or National level, so this will be the first time they have teamed up to present a metropolitan level event and they are hoping that their event might serve as model for other course planners to emulate.  More photos of the area may be viewed here.

The Assembly area is at the tunnel under Yamba Drive at the end of Shepherdson Place Isaacs.  The event details are hereAt the event check the notice on the Orienteering ACT 3-Step registration process which is designed to streamline the processing entries at events.

Points calculation.  After Andrew Blakers dedicated 20 years of calculating the Runners Shop Twilight Series points the OACT Board has decided to use a more simplified process which still uses Blakers’ age-gender basis for calculating the points.  The updated standings will be published each week here.
