Women Share Top Honours in Final Twilight Event for 2013

have shared the top points in event 9 of the 2013-14 Runners Shop Twilight
Series at Campbell Parklands (results and splits) on Wednesday evening, the
last event for 2013 and a four-week break.
Anna Quayle (pic above left) showed her win two weeks ago was no fluke
in converting her 31 min 16 sec for the 5.0 km Orange 1 course, which also the
third fastest time for the course into 125 points (points table).
After
years of consistently being close to the top Carol Harding (pic above middle)
finally cracked the top three with her time of 40 min 40 sec being good enough
for second place, 124 points. And to give women the trifecta Jo Allison’s (pic
above right) time of 35 min 25 sec converted into 123 points. Eric Morris
denied Grace Crane the opportunity to make it top four to the women.
After
nine events (and eight to go)  Lizzie Ingham has regained the solo lead on the
basis of her best five scores totalling 618 points. Allison trails by just a
point on 617 and Matt Crane missed a good opportunity to go to the lead in
scoring only 116 points on Wednesday and now only has 612 points. This was his
lowest score for 12 months. Others in
the top 10 are David Shepherd (609), five times winner Trevor Jacobs (608),
Grace Crane (601), Andrew Kerr (pic on right) (600), Stephen Melhuish (599),
Harding (595) and Ari Piiroinen (585).
The
series will resume with event 10 at the Australian National University on 15 January
and continue through to event 17 at Commonwealth Park on 5 March. The final result will be based on the best 9
scores from 17 events.

Thunders Storms Stayed Away From Bruce Ridge

The possibility of thunder storms on  Bruce Ridge on Wednesday evening did not deter the 192 competitors who took on the challenging courses planned by Murray Scown (pic on right), Canberra Cockatoo squad member. Murray is currently studying at UNE in Armidale but set some armchair courses successfully transferred to the terrain by his parents, John and Ann.
The assembly area at the north east end of the O’Connor/Bruce Ridge Nature Park was hit by some strong winds but no rain.
The long moderate course traversed almost the full length of the map and provided a longer distance than has been the norm this Twilight Season. In fact, three moderate courses were on offer along with an interesting training activity set by Lukas Funk using most of the same control locations, but on a map devoid of the small MTB tracks and with no visible detail in the control circle.
Prior to the orienteers hitting the forest, an echidna was seen checking out a few control locations and later, as all signs of the event were finally removed, the local grey kangaroo population returned to the area to ensure that all was back to normal.
With the assistance of most of the Abominables the event was a great success. The same force will bring you an event in mid January at ANU. We look forward to some great courses set by Lizzie.
Newcomers to the orienteering in the ACT might notice some unfamiliar names in the results and splits. Those names include two who are among Australia’s best ever orienteers, Tom Quayle and Cassie Trewin. Both are visiting family with their spouses Anna Quayle and Jim Oystein Nybraten.
Tom has the best result for an Australian man in the World Long Distance Championships (13th in Sweden in 2004-pic on right) and in 1998 became one of the few competitors to achieve a HRS (handicap relative speed) of better than 1.0 under Andrew Blakers handicapping system. Serious problems with his legs forced him into early retirement from elite orienteering in 2005. In recent years he has been the Coach of the Australian Boomerangs, the team that represents Australia at  World Orienteering Championships.
Similarly, Cassie Trewin was forced out of the sport by a serious back injury while at her top. Just before she departed for an ill-fated trip to Europe in mid-2000, Cassie easily won the Australian Long Distance Championships and the Asia Pacific Long Distance Championships (pic on left), both by impressive margins. Both Tom and Cassie married top overseas orienteers and now live in Sweden and Norway respectively. We are always pleased see to them back home.
Anna Quayle (pic on right) showed she  had no jet-lag as she scored the top points (125) in the Runners Shop Twilight Series competition event 7 to relegate two other top women Jo Allison (124) and Lizzie Ingham (123) into second and third place. The next best were Jim Oystein Nybraten 122, Andrew Kerr 121 and perennial competitor Trevor Jacobs on 120 points.
With the best four scores from seven events now being counted, some competitors like Matt Crane have dropped from contention because they have less than four scores. Ingham still leads the competition on 497 points from Allison on 494, with David Shepherd third on 488, followed by Jacobs 484, Kerr 482 and Stephen Melhuish on 481 points. They are the only competitors to average 120 points or more per event; progress points are here.
Event 8 will be at Lyneham North.

2013 Blue Sparks Annual Camp

remained high with around 50 people coming together for another dose of Orienteering
fun, frolic and fery (theory) at the 7th Annual ACT Blue Sparks 2013 training camp. Along
with our invited guests the NSW
Wildfires, 22 adults and 25 children came together for stack serious
training. The true value of this training is the bringing together of children AND THEIR PARENTS to learn concurrently
what the sport is all about.
The
new Charley’s Forest map in hand (a big thanks to Hugh Moore for the mapping!) made the weekend training very
worthwhile.

Canberra Cockatoos Collect Five SportStar Awards for October

In a rare achievement the Canberra Cockatoos won five monthly SportStar awards for the month of October, with the Cockatoos winning the team award, Grant McDonald the Coach of the month, Lizzie Ingham the female athlete, Matt Crane the male athlete and Ian Lawford the junior athlete. As the year for The Tradies ACT Annual SportStar ends on 30 September, these monthly awards will be considered for the 2014 Annual Awards.
Canberra Cockatoos citation
Over the weekend of 5-6 October, the Canberra Cockatoos concluded their most successful season with its teams winning three of the four divisions of the National Orienteering League and team members winning three of the four divisions of the National Orienteering Series. In the 20-year history of the National League this was the first time any team had won three divisions in the same year and the first time the members of any team had won three divisions of National Series.
The three winning National League teams were:
· The Senior Men’s team won 10 of the 13 stages and amassed 113 points to defeat the Victorian Nuggets by 15 points.
· The Junior Men’s team won nine of the 13 stages and amassed 72 points to defeat the Tassie Foresters by 16 points.
· The Senior Women’s team won seven of the 13 stages and amassed 105 points to defeat the Victorian Nuggets by just four points. Both teams went in the 13th and final stage (the Australian Relay Championships) on equal points so whichever team finished ahead of the other in the Relays would also win the National League competition for 2013. The Victorians had establiahed a seemingly unbeatable lead going into the third and final leg, with the Cockatoos anchor leg runner Jo Allison starting nearly four minutes behind. Allison had just returned to national competition after missing a few seasons through the birth of her two sons. In a remarkable achievement somewhere out in the forest she had managed to pass the Nuggets Kathryn Preston and win by 20 seconds to give the Cockatoos their third win.
Grant McDonald
Grant McDonald was the coach of Canberra Cockatoos who, over the weekend of 5-6 October, concluded their most successful season with its teams winning three of the four divisions of the National Orienteering League and team members winning three of the four divisions of the National Orienteering Series.
During the six seasons that McDonald has coached the Cockatoos, the Senior Men has won four times, the Junior Men three times and the Senior Women once. Team members have also enjoyed success in all the National Series winning two Senior Men’s, three Senior Women’s, four Junior Men’s and three Junior Women’s titles.
Matt Crane
Matthew Crane was a member of Canberra Cockatoos who, over the weekend of 5-6 October, concluded their most successful season with its teams winning three of the four divisions of the National Orienteering League and team members winning three of the four divisions of the National Orienteering Series.
Crane won the National Series Senior Men’s division for the third time having won previously in 2007 and 2012. In 2013 he won seven of the 11 stages he contested to amass 240 points, to be 36 points clear of the Southern Arrows Simon Uppill. Crane was the lead runner for the Cockatoos in the Senior Men’s team. He anchored the team to victory in the Australian Relay Championships.
Lizzie Ingham
Lizzie Ingham was a member of Canberra Cockatoos who, over the weekend of 5-6 October, concluded their most successful season with its teams winning three of the four divisions of the National Orienteering League and team members winning three of the four divisions of the National Orienteering Series.
Ingham won the National Series Senior Women’s division. She won eight (straight) of the 10 stages she contested to amass 240 points, to be 15 points clear of the Tassie Foresters Grace Crane. Ingham was the lead runner for the Cockatoos in the Senior Women’s team. She was also the lead out runner for the team’s victory in the Australian Relay Championships.
Ian Lawford
Ian Lawford was a member of Canberra Cockatoos who, over the weekend of 5-6 October, concluded their most successful season with its teams winning three of the four divisions of the National Orienteering League and team members winning three of the four divisions of the National Orienteering Series.
Lawford won the National Series Junior Men’s division for the second time in four years (previously in 2010). He won three of the 10 stages he contested to amass 170 points, to be just three points clear of fellow Cockatoo Oliver Poland who won in 2011 and 2012. Lawford and Poland went into the final race on equal points so whomever finished ahead would win the competition for 2013. Lawford was first and Poland was second.

Orienteering ACT’s End of Year dinner was held on Sunday 24 November 2013. Good time was had by all. The following awards were presented.
The Mike Cassells Award for Services to Orienteering. Awarded to Chris Mill. Chris initiated the Blue Sparks group in 2007. The idea behind Blue Sparks was to involve primary school aged children in orienteering at events, many of those children proceeding onto Blue Lightning Squad. Chris was instrumental in developing the Blue Sparks equipment and uniform. For many years he was the ‘contact’ person for Blue Sparks and this expanded into being the contact person for many other junior activities.
Jim Sawkins Award for Services to Event Management: Awarded to Maurice Patten for his services at OACT’s major events (Easter 2010, Australian/Oceania Championships at Badja in 2011 and the recent Australian Championships. Maurice was the logistics manager for those events. He determined and obtained the equipment as necessary, ensuring that all the correct equipment was at the event, at the right place and time and doing it in a methodical manner, and the event organisers knew it would be done.
Services to Coaching. Lizzie Ingham was the assistant Blue Lightening coach for 2013, happily giving her time and wisdom. In this capacity she provided insights and inspiration to the younger orienteers. Before formally taking on this role she has volunteered to assist on many occasions.
Wehner Cup – The Orienteer of the Year Award. This is awarded to the person achieving the highest number of points in the ACT League competition. This was presented to Lizzie Ingham for 2013.
Southern Cross Inter Club Challenge. Awarded to the club which scores the highest points in ACT League events. Bush Flyers.
Age Based Awards. These awards are presented based on orienteering performance in the ACT League Competition, and / or outstanding performance in national orienteering events.

President’s Volunteer Awards.
Sue Garr - For the last 2 major carnivals held by OACT, Sue has taken on an overall organisation capacity with respect to registration, start and finish officials and co-coordinating the Club resources needed.
Greg Lane - Greg undertook the responsibility of maintaining the web site for the recent Australian Championships Carnival. He also assisted in the co-ordination of catering by Blue Lightning for the final weekend of the Carnival.
Rohan Hyslop - This year Rohan took on the role of coaching the Blue Lightning squad and ACT Schools Team. He co-coordinated twice weekly training sessions throughout the season so our young athletes could develop their technical skills, fitness and competition skills. Rohan encouraged local elite orienteers to take guest sessions and mentored individuals, especially Lizzie Ingham to assist her to pitch her sessions at an appropriate level for such a diverse range of juniors (and their parents, siblings and friends).
Phillip Purcell - Phillip has been the "man behind the scenes" in the production of the OACT newsletter probably longer than he cares to remember. He has co-coordinated contributions, reminded club contacts that their regular articles are required, and has often held up production so that all relevant information was available to members.
Ann Scown - Ann has been the Treasurer for Orienteering ACT for 6 of the past 7 years. While we do not have vast amounts of money (and that perhaps makes it harder) there are a huge number of transactions to deal with, particularly in a Carnival year.

Orienteering Championships 2013 - a laudable success
as 15 schools pitched enthusiasm through a serious body and brain workout, to
compete to be the 2013 ACT Orienteering Champion Primary School.

girls and 93 boys took to the bush tracks either individually or in pairs in a
challenge against the map, the bush and their rivals. And some of the kids took
it event further becoming bush “pixies” as they floated wings aloft through the
forest – well done to the fancy dressers!
Once
again the helper contingent
performed magnificently demonstrating the true spirit of the sport with mums
and dads, grandparents and off-siders all pitching in to ensure the courses
could be challenging but secure and to make the day a huge success. A
huge THANKS to the volunteers!!

This
year’s individual events saw an interesting mix of old hands and new faces
taking out the places. Girls 9 years was
won by newcomer Justine Hobson from Radford College - has that girl been
doing some training? A pint sized racer with determination to boot. Justine was
followed home by Sophie Munro Mobbs from Aranda PS and youngster Rose Phillips from Home School who will have another year in this category.
The warm conditions did not impact Rebecca Cameron Neser cruising around the Girls 10 years course to establish a clear margin over fellow Majura PS student Kathryn Wilkinson.
Once
again this year's speedster Zoe Melhuish
from Girls Grammar ran strongly
taking first place in the Girls 11 competition closely followed by Riley Lane of Macquarie PS and Ella
Cuthbert of Majura PS. If you are a
form watcher I’d be keeping a close eye on this cluster! In fact the girls
field overall was rather impressive with a strong run from Lyneham Primary’s Caitin Young in girls 12 years, followed by Zoe Boyd of Orana Steiner. Clearly the climb to the top of the Pinnacle was
barely noticed with such focus on the map.
Tristan Miller from Majura PS, claimed another gold adding to his individual victories in 2011 and 2012 by blitzing around the Boys 12 years course. Jack Carey from Canberra Grammar School improved on his 4th place from 2012, while newcomer Tenzing Johnson from Aranda PS secured third place.
In Boys
11 years, Andrew Kerr from Radford College also took out his third individual title in as many years. Matthew Birch from Canberra Grammar School was narrowly ahead of Brendan Wilson from Radford College. These three boys have had great tussles over the past two years and will be a trio to watch in the future.
Closest results from the carnival were in the Boys 10 years where David Stocks from Aranda PS was only 30 sec ahead
of Nicholas Fitzgerald from Canberra Grammar School with Elijah Witchalls also from Aranda PS a further 1 minute behind. Making regular appearances at the Wednesday Night Twilight events obviously their hard work and training have paid off.
Competing in their first ACT Primary School Championships, Blake Faunce from Radford College, ran smoothly to edge out Sam Thomson from Aranda PS and Toby Wilson from Canberra Grammar School.
The boys seemed to dominate the top
places in the Pairs categories. The pairs 12 years event was taken out by Majura PS's Jack Dare & Daniel Vordon followed by Turner PS Sean Brady
& Leighton Price and Callum McGarty & Dyan Braagaard for second and
third respectively. In the pairs 10 years, Radford College confidently carried
away all three places – they must be feeding them some serious team map reading

Shelton Agar; Finn Zentelis-Wilde
& David Reistatter; Angus Robertson & Jordi Canadell – were only separated by 2 minutes!
The Champion
School was determined by points allocated to the first five places in each category. Last year's runners up Radford College stole the show on 66 points, ahead of Majura PS, 54pts with the ever consistent Canberra Grammar School and newcomers Aranda PS tied for third on 44pts.
The
competitors and parents alike were intrigued and fascinated by the stories told
by two of our home grown champions Oliver
Poland and Shannon Jones – ever
willing to put back into their favourite sport. While Oliver shared his
experiences of coming through the ranks as a Primary School Champion, to
represent Australia at, so far, FOUR Junior
World Championship events, Shannon set the inspiring example – sharing
experiences of World Championships - from run to mum and back!!!
The
Championship event once again demonstrated that interest in Orienteering is
alive and thriving in the Nation’s capital - a city well placed to give kids
the true orienteering adventure test in every encounter.
The
ACT Primary Schools Orienteering
Championship 2014 will be held on Wednesday
19th November 2013 at a location to be confirmed. We hope to see many of the
current runners back and many more new runners as well.
ACT
High Schools Championships will be on Sat
May 24th 2014. All current year 6 competitors are urged to
consider entries with their High Schools.

The popularity of Map Mates boosted participation in the first four events in the 2013-14 Runners Shop Twilight Series as the table below indicates.

The venue for event # 1 each year was comparable and the venues for the other three were the same, but wet weather impacted on events 3 and 4 in 2012, nonetheless the number of entries and participants for each event was higher than expected. The numbers for event # 2 were a record for a Metropolitan event (Twilight or Saturday), the number of entries exceeded 200 for the first time and the number of participants exceeded 250 for the first time at a Twilight event and only for the second time at a Metro event.
Lizzie Ingham Leads Runners Shop Series. Lizzie Ingham has begun the 2013-14 Runners Shop Twilight Series the same way she did in the 2012-13 Series with two wins in the first four events and leads the competition on 250 points, from Rob Walter (best in Event # 1) and Matt Crane (best in Event # 4) equal second on 248, with Allison Jones 246 and Jo Allison 245 making up the top five. The surprise competitor for the series is junior Andrew Kerr, who was second best in Event # 3 and been well placed in two of the other events. The next event will be at The Pinnacle on Wednesday, after the ACT Primary Schools Championships.

Advanced Navigation Workshops - More Planned.

Lukas Funk (right) , our invited coach from Switzerland, delighted 18 members with his Advanced Navigation Workshop at Sandhills this Sunday - the first of many more advanced workshops planned. Concentrating on advanced compass skills he taught us speedy exit direction technique and following compass bearings over long difficult terrain. Sandhills lived up to its challenging reputation but the icy weather did not deter the enthusiastic participants.

FIELDS AGAIN LAST WEEK IN BOTH THE STREET AND WEDNESDAY TWILIGHT EVENTS
Spring and autumn are the best times of the year for weather in
Canberra and there were very good fields for both Monday’s street orienteering
at Lyneham (89 participants) and Wednesday’s Twilight sprint course event at Radford

Map reading in the Twilight event at Radford College next Wednesday

This Wednesday's Twilight event is at Radford College in Bruce. It is a sprint format event in the school grounds. The map is 1:4000 and participants need to be aware of the rules for uncrossable features such as garden beds, walls and fences. Orienteering at Forrest and Campbell Park this week

Orienteering this week is at Forrest on Monday 28 October and at Campbell Park Wednsday 30 October.
Last week at Remembrance Park:
Some quite challenging courses were set by Oliver Mill, making good use of the flattish area in the east of the map. In the Orange 1 course both Rob Walter and David Shepherd were on hand to show that as you get a bit older you get faster with Rob Walter doing the 4.4km Orange 1 course in 27 minutes 53 seconds (27:53) followed by David in 28:57. The fastest woman on the Orange 1 course was Jo Allison at 35:24.
In the shorter Orange 2 course, youth does win out with Andrew Kerr doing it in 30:18. He was followed by Phoebe Dent in 33:45. The fastest in the 1.8km Green course was Elly Cuthbert at 16:39, followed by a team of Ethan Laver and Roy Prosser at 16:43. The fastest in the Blue course was Harry Gibbs at 17:18.
The Runners Shop Twilight Orienteering Series continues this week, on Wednesday 30 October from 5pm. Location is at Campbell Park near the offices. Map Mates and the navigation workshops also continue on that day at Campbell Park.
Also Street Orienteering – At Forrest Meanwhile for those who need to get into condition for Campbell Park, and also for everyone else because it is fun, Street Orienteering continues at Forrest. Assembly is at National Circuit near the school for a mass start at 6.15pm on this Monday 28 October

Launch of 2013-14 Runners Shop Twilight Series

 The Red Roos will launch the 2013-14 Runners Shop Twilight Series
at Remembrance Pk on Wednesday 23 October with courses set by Oliver Mill. Access to parking will from Treloar Crescent, Campbell.
Course lengths: Orange 1: 4.4 km, Orange 2: 3.2
km, Green: 1.8 km, Blue: 1.8 km. Starts from 5.00 pm through to
6.30 pm and course closure is at 7.30 pm.
Competitors who have not completed their course by 7.30 pm should
abandon their course and return to the Finish.
Events in the Series will continue each Wednesday
evening through to 18 December, when there will be a four-week break with the
Series resuming on 15 January 2014 at ANU.
The 17-event series will end on 5 March at Commonwealth Park.
The Runners Shop Twilight Series
competition is based on the performances of individuals on the Moderate, ie Orange
1 and Orange 2 courses. The competition rules are here.
The first four events will also include the Spring 2013 Term 4 Map
Mates series.

Street Orienteering, next week at Ainslie

 Over 70 participants turned out at Curtin
for the first spring/summer Street Orienteering event on 14 October. Despite the chilly start there was a good mix of teams and
individuals. David Alder and Grace Crane
finished in 1st and 2nd in Course A. James Heyes and Ana
Herceg topped the Course B. Kelly
Edwards and Dennis Trewin finished 1 & 2 in Course C. Michael Burt managed to collect 14 controls
Power Walking. Well done to everyone who
turned out. It’s a great way to kick
start a healthy fitness program to look good in that bikini J

ACT High Schools and Colleges Championships Results

52 kids from 15 ACT Secondary Schools and Colleges competed in the 2013 ACT Secondary Schools and Colleges Championships held at Canberra Grammar School in windy conditions today. This, the first such championships since 2006, was for many entrants an eye opener into the razzamatazz of a major carnival. "I have never seen so much bunting at an event before" remarked one puzzled 14 year old. It was a great opportunity for the volunteers of the future to be inspired to take up orienteering as a lifetime sport. We look forward to seeing you at the 2014 High School Champs on Sat 24th May 2014

2013 Australian Championships Start Lists Available

The
Start lists for the 2013 Australian Sprint , Middle and Long Distance Championships as well event 4 (Wild Deer Chase) and event 6 (Macca’s
Maze) are now available on Eventor. The
Entry Lists for the 2013 Australian Schools Orienteering Championships (no Start Times until 30/9) and
the Centenary of Canberra Flashback (with nom Start Times of 10.30 am) are also
available.
The Start Draw for the 2013 Australian Schools Orienteering Championships will be
undertaken late afternoon on Monday 30 September. All competitors in the Centenary of Canberra Flashback have a nominal start time of 10.30 am, but competitors may
start any time between 10.30 am and 1.00 pm, with a Course Closure time of 3.00
pm.
The total number of individual competitors across all is events is just under 900, with around 700 being from interstate or overseas.
